IOANNA G. STEFANAKI
At the beginning of her career at the turn of the century during her tenure at Norton Rose Athens, Ioanna was given the opportunity to participate in pioneering project finance transactions that transformed Greece's infrastructure and energy landscape, including serving as legal adviser on the landmark Athens Ring Road (Attiki Odos) construction project and Greece's first private wind farm financing led by a major international banking consortium. Her expertise in adapting English law financing structures to Greek legal frameworks proved valuable in these groundbreaking deals, leading to her involvement in the country's energy market liberalization as legal adviser to both the national electricity company and the newly established energy regulator.
Ioanna subsequently participated in a distinguished litigation practice, handling high-stakes commercial disputes including major shareholder conflicts in traditional shipping companies, spearheading a private marina acquisition in Attica where she led negotiations and due diligence, and managing complex debt restructuring cases involving hundreds of millions of euros, representing clients before competition authorities in cases involving automotive distribution. Her experience expanded to include serving as legal adviser to Greece's privatization agency during the country's bailout period, handling politically sensitive asset sales, achieving legal precedent representing a major Swiss investment bank in landmark takeover bid litigation before the Greek Supreme Court, successfully representing a major Greek entrepreneur before the trial and appellate courts up to the Supreme Court in a case regarding mandatory bids against a multinational energy company based in the EU, and representing Greek bondholders in their claim against European Union institutions following the debt crisis (PSI), as well as advising prominent Greek entrepreneurs in significant corporate disputes.
Prior to founding Nomine, Ioanna became a partner at Zepos & Yannopoulos in the private clients’ team, focusing on estate planning matters in collaboration with specialized tax lawyers. Recognizing that complex personal and family matters such as estate planning and succession disputes require a comprehensive understanding that spans multiple legal disciplines, Ioanna decided to focus on private clients, applying her rare combination of expertise in corporate law, finance, capital markets, and litigation to address complex personal issues, particularly those involving tax optimization, family wealth distribution structures, and succession dispute settlements that should be designed to withstand rigorous legal scrutiny should they be contested in court, a critical consideration that is frequently underestimated.
